Our May Box: 'Mastering Critical Thinking'
I was recently told by my University Lecturer that I needed to improve my critical thinking skills. I already knew this, but the truth is, I had no idea where to even start .
I came across this riddle - “A father and son have a car accident and are both badly hurt. They are both taken to separate hospitals. When the boy is taken in for an operation, the surgeon (doctor) says 'I can not do the surgery because this is my son'. How is this possible?”
Have you heard of this riddle before? Do you know the answer?
Well, I got the answer wrong! I was so confused. How was it possible? I didn’t even consider that the surgeon was the son’s MOTHER!
That was like a big slap in the face because I’m all about women empowerment and showing you can be anything that you want to be, but I had never thought that my unconscious bias would be so far from where I thought it was.
Now that my unconscious bias was at the forefront of my mind, I wondered how many others needed support in improving their own critical thinking skills, and undercovering their own gender bias.
Then I came across Annie’s book. It’s like it was meant to be! I loved that although I was learning and improving my critical thinking skills, Annie’s book is also light hearted and funny!
I learnt to reflect on decisions that I make and to not just ‘trust my gut. Because as I have learnt from Annie’s book is that your gut isn’t always right, and it’s just another part of your brain taking over and making that decision for you, it’s not your gut.
We can all improve our critical thinking skills and the first step is awareness. The second step is to practise it each day. That’s why this book is so great. It's my go to book to re-read the stories of Kat and the not so good decisions she has made in her life.
Critical thinking empowers working mums by improving:
- Decision-making abilities
- Problem-solving skills
- Time management
- Adaptability
- Self-awareness
- Communication
- Collaboration
By practising this skill, working mums can navigate the challenges of balancing work and family responsibilities more effectively, leading to greater fulfilment and success in both work and life.
This month's featured book:
Why Smart Women Make Bad Decisions and how critical thinking can protect them
In Why Smart Women Make Bad Decisions, our protagonist Kat is learning that the philosophy of ‘Believe-in-yourself-and Magic-will-happen’ will not deliver her a better life. Her story, which recounts her hapless attempts to navigate scenarios disturbingly familiar to many readers, is presented with a companion account of the cognitive quirks that drive her faulty thinking and behaviour.
It becomes clear to Kat, and in turn the reader, that positive thinking, meditation and magical thinking will not turn her life around. Instead, women should apply the narrator’s advice and change the inherent cognitive flaws that run, and often ruin, their lives.
